Frequently asked questions
1- You bought a bike from a professional (store, workshop, association)
At the time of purchase, your dealer has registered your details and the description of your bike in the Fichier National Unique des Cycles Identifiés (FNUCI).
You have just received an e-mail inviting you to create your BicyCode account or to add your bike to your existing account. It's essential that you do this, to ensure better management of your bike in the event of a problem or future transfer.
2- You buy a bike from another private individual
- Did you check that it wasn't a stolen bike?
If the bike has a marking code (FNUCI code), check its FNUCI status on the APIC website: www.apic-asso.com.
It must be indicated as "in service" or "for sale".
If it is declared "stolen" or "lost", refrain from buying it, as you would be guilty of receiving stolen goods.
- Become the bike's legal owner
Only the current owner can transfer ownership of his bike. He is therefore the only person authorized to transfer ownership to you and to update the FNUCI with your personal details (surname, first name, e-mail and telephone number).
Before you leave with your bike, make sure you've received the e-mail from BicyCode inviting you to manage your bike in your bike garage. Failure to do so could result in your bike being reported stolen at a later date.
As soon as possible, create your Bicycle Garage account or add your bike to your existing account. This action is essential to officially become the bike's legal owner in the FNUCI (national file).
- The bike has no markings?
If the bike is not yet marked, you need to check that the seller is the owner by requesting proof of purchase. We invite you to go and have your bike marked by one of our BicyCode partners, so that you can become its legal owner.
From your bike's data sheet, you can download the national registration certificate in PDF format.
This "certificate of identification" is also known as "proof of registration" or "proof of identification". It is generally requested when applying for regional subsidies and/or by insurers.
We recommend that you download it and keep it with your bike invoice, so that in the event of theft, you have all the information you need to pass on to the police.
To obtain a certificate of approval, please contact your dealer or manufacturer, who will be able to advise you.
This document, which guarantees that the bike complies with all current standards and regulations, cannot be generated by our service, so we won't be able to help you.
We only manage questions related to the FNUCI (national file) and to your user interface of an identified bike.
What is a homologation certificate?
Also known as a certificate of conformity, homologation is an official document. It details the technical specifications of the electric bicycle. Like an identification card, the homologation certificate attests that the vehicle complies with European safety standards. A number of data must appear on this type of document:
- the electric bicycle model
- manufacturer's name
- brand name
- the year the electric bike was manufactured
- the CE directive and European standards
Bicycle marking processes are designed to make the code inalterable and weather-resistant. However, in the event of deliberate or accidental damage, the bike and its owner remain registered in the Fichier National Unique des Cycles Identifiés (FNUCI), provided you know your bike's identification number, which is essential for managing its status.
This number appears on the identification certificate issued by the dealer when your bike is purchased or marked.
In the event of deterioration of the code, we recommend that you contact the organization that produced the marking, so that they can propose a solution that complies with FNUCI rules. It is important to note that it is not possible to reissue a new code, as each code is unique.
What to do if the code is damaged?
You have two options:
- The professional can administratively cancel the damaged code and assign a new one, which will be registered in your name in the FNUCI.
- If the label remains partially legible, or if you have kept the registration receipt and purchase invoice, some professionals can re-engrave the original code.
Procedures may vary from one professional to another, each structure being autonomous in the application of its rules and conditions.
This ensures that your bike remains identifiable, even if the marking code is damaged.
Find a marking partner:
To locate a professional offering these services, please contact BicyCode support, specifying your town and zip code.
If your bike has been stolen, here are the steps to follow:
1- File a complaint
You must report the theft of your bike to the police. To save time, you can fill in a pre-report form online, which will make it easier for you to report the theft to the police station.
If your bike is found and registered as lost or stolen, the police can contact you to return it.
2- Report your bike stolen in your "bike garage" area
You already have a Bike Garage account
Log in to your bike garage, go to your bike's page.
In the Bike statusclick on Déclarer le vol ou la perte
.
All you have to do is confirm your declaration.
The status of your bike will then be updated in the FNUCI. In the event of a search on apic-asso.com, it will appear as stolen or lost.
If the bike is checked by the police, they will be able to take action.
You don't have a Bike Garage account
Create an account at https://moncompte.bicycode.eu/s-inscrire.
Add your bike, using the code FNUCI (for more information, see How do I add a bike?).
Go to your bike's page.
In the Bike statusclick on Déclarer le vol ou la perte
.
All you have to do is confirm your declaration.
You no longer know your account details and your mailbox is no longer accessible
If you can no longer log in (inaccessible e-mail address and forgotten password), you must submit a request to exercise your rights in accordance with the RGPD, by contacting BicyCode's DPO :
E-mail address: dpo@bicycode.eu
Subject of e-mail: Stolen bike - Loss of garage access
Your e-mail must include at least the following information:
- Bicycle marking code (FNUCI code)
- Our last name, first name and telephone number
- Account e-mail address no longer accessible
- The new e-mail address for updating the account
- Ideally, a copy of the complaint.
3- If your bike is insured, contact your insurance company
Take the necessary steps with your insurer to report the theft.
Cycle identification is governed by Decree no. 2020-1439 of November 23, 2020 and the Order of December 29, 2020 (JORF no. 0316). It applies to all new bicycles sold since January 1ᵉʳ, 2021, as well as to used bicycles sold since July 1ᵉʳ, 2021, by any type of retailer: bicycle shop, food superstore, specialized superstore, secondhand shop, etc.
Therefore, your bike must be marked and registered in the FNUCI in your name if you have bought or collected a bike:
- new, from a retailer, since January 1ᵉʳ, 2021
- second-hand, from a retailer, since 1ᵉʳ July 2021
- to a private individual, if he or she bought the bike in 2021 or later.
On the other hand, your bike is not subject to the legal obligation to be marked in the FNUCI if you have purchased or recovered it:
- new, from a retailer, before 2021
- from a dealer before 2021
The aim of the FNUCI is to maintain a register of identified cycles, enabling law enforcement agencies to return your bike to you in the event of recovery. To guarantee this efficiency, it's essential to keep your bike's status up to date.
The status of a bike can be checked by anyone at https://apic-asso.com/ using the bike's FNUCI code.
Law enforcement agencies have full, dedicated access to the national file (FNUCI).
Bikes in service
This bike has been registered and is in its default state.
If you are the owner and wish to change its status, you must log in to your "Bicycle garage" account.
Bikes for sale
The owner of this bike (usually a private individual) has put his bike up for sale.
If you wish to buy a bike, it is advisable to ask the owner to put the bike "up for sale" to ensure that he or she is the current rightful owner.
Stolen or lost bike
This bike has been reported stolen or lost by its owner. This means that if you find it in circulation, or for sale somewhere, it must not be purchased.
If you find this bike, you must inform the nearest municipal or national police or gendarmerie. Only the police will be able to contact the owner to let him know that his bike has been found.
If you are the owner of the bike, and it has been stolen, you must report it stolen/lost from your account. At the same time, you must also file a complaint. These two actions are independent of each other.
Bicycle out of use, destroyed
This bike is no longer roadworthy. It has been taken to a parts recycling center or to a waste disposal site. This status is irreversible.
Workshop bike
The bike has been registered by its dealer, but has not yet left his warehouse or store.
If your bike is identified as "leaving the workshop", this means that your dealer has not registered you in FNUCI as the bike's owner. Therefore, if your bike is lost and found again, you cannot be contacted to recover it. Go back to your dealer to be registered.
Code not referenced
The code you have entered is not an FNUCI code. You may have mistaken your bike's FNUCI code for a serial number or other number.
On your bike's data sheet, you can add the bike's serial number, as well as those of the battery and motor if your bike is electrically assisted.
It is important to note that the serial number is not mandatory information for the national file; it is optional (and therefore not transmitted to the UNFCI).
To do this, go to theSerial numbers"and click on Modifier
You can then add your serial numbers, then Valider
.
Our little tip: We strongly recommend that you record these serial numbers on your bicycle garage. In the event of theft, you'll have all the information you need to pass on to the police.
Note that it is only the marking code (FNUI code) that indicates the status of the bike in the national file (FNUCI).
To guarantee the security of the information recorded in the FNUCI (Fichier National Unique des Cycles Identifiés), it is forbidden for the bike owners or the structures responsible for marking to modify the characteristics of your bike.
However, you can submit a modification request to your dealer, who will forward it to your authorized identification operator.
It is important to note that an error in the bike's description does not prevent it from being returned in the event of theft and recovery by the police. The essential information remains the bike's identification code and status.
You can modify or make changes to your bike (such as adding a battery or changing the color) and save these changes to your account. The changes you make to your bike are not transmitted to the Fichier National Unique des Cycles Identifiés (FNUCI). This information is for your exclusive use.
There are several ways to add your bike to your account:
1 - Adding your first bike
- After logging in, click on the
Ajouter un vélo
; - Add the FNUCI code of your bike and validate;
- Add the 6-digit activation code you have just received by e-mail, and validate. This code is needed to confirm that you are the owner of the bike.
Your first bike has just been added! You can see it in the "My bike garage" area, next to the button for adding a new bike.
2 - Adding a bike via notification
Adding a bike to your account can be simplified if the following two conditions are met:
- You had already created your "Garage à vélo" account with your e-mail address
- Your new bike is registered with the same e-mail address.
Then simply log in to your account to validate your new purchase. A notification appears above the "My bike garage" area, asking you to accept or reject the new bike.
Check the FNUCI code and the bike description.
If this is your bike, click on Accepter
to add your bike to your account.
If this bike does not belong to you, then click on Refuser
so that it disappears from your account and the real owner can find it again.
3 - bike owners
If your bike was still on the old Bicycode.org platform on which you already had an account, you can :
- or use an activation code received by e-mail,
- or use the password shown on your bike's BicyCode® passport, in the "passport code" section.
You will then be asked to provide a description of your bike so that it can be added to the National File.
If your bike was still on the old Bicycode.org platform, but you hadn't created your account, you'll need the password from your BicyCode® passport.
You will then be asked for the description and status of your bike to add it to the National File.

Buy / Sell a bike
A bike is considered to be "in transit" when it changes ownership. To initiate this transfer of ownership, the seller or donor has entered the purchaser's details in the bike file.
However, until the new owner completes the process by adding the bike to his or her BicyCode bike garage, the bike remains in transit, as an operation is in progress.
This transit period also allows the former owner to cancel a transfer made in error, or to correct inaccurate information concerning the purchaser.
Cycle identification is in force (decree no. 2020-1439 of November 23, 2020 and order of December 29, 2020 JORF no. 0316) on all bicycles sold new (since January 1ᵉʳ, 2021) or used (since July 1ᵉʳ, 2021) by any retailer: bike shop, food superstore, specialized superstore, second-hand shop, etc.
Bicycle registration is a legal obligation for professionals, who must register the bike in your name at the time of purchase. If your bike has not been registered, we recommend that you contact the dealer as soon as possible so that the situation can be rectified in accordance with current regulations.
If you encounter difficulties with the professional to register your bike, you will have to contact BicyCode support. To enable us, as the operator, to intervene effectively with the professional, please provide us with the following information:
- The marking code on the bike
- Date of purchase
- Dealer name and city
- Ideally, the purchase invoice
- Vos informations personnelles : nom, prénom, e-mail, et numéro de téléphone </aside>
From your bike's file, in the "Bike status" block, click on "Transfer ownership".
Then complete the fields with the new owner's details and confirm the transfer.
The new owner will receive an automatic e-mail from no-reply@bicycode.eu to accept the transfer. The new owner must create an account and confirm the addition of the bike.
Until the transfer is validated by the buyer, the bike remains in your account and is considered to be "in transit".
During the transit period, you can access the bike's file to correct any errors, such as the purchaser's address, or to cancel the transfer if it was made in error.
My account
For the old BicyCode interface:
You have been invited to create an account on the new BicyCode space dedicated to bike owners. The old BicyCode space has been deactivated to make way for this new, clearer and easier-to-use interface.
We recommend that you create a new account and add your bikes to it. Rest assured, all bikes registered in the National File at the time of purchase or branding are still secure and have not been deleted or deactivated.
The new BicyCode owner space requires you to create an account with an e-mail address and password to access your personal space and easily manage all your bikes.
For the Paravol interface :
As part of BicyCode's acquisition of Paravol, we invite all former Paravol users to create a new account on the BicyCode platform.
To facilitate this transition, we recommend that you use the same e-mail address as the one you had on Paravol.
This will enable you to easily retrieve the list of your registered bikes. You will then be asked to complete the transfer of each bike to BicyCode.
Deleting an account is an irreversible action, deleting all your data.
To do this, go to the Mon profil
on your account. You'll find a space called "Delete my account". Click on the button of the same name, and confirm this action.
Important: You will only be able to delete your account if you no longer own any bikes, i.e. if your bike garage is completely empty. If you have any further questions or difficulties concerning the deletion of an account, please do not hesitate to contact us.
To change your contact details, click on Mon profil
in the top menu.
Then click on Modifier
in the "My information" block.
Make the changes you wish, then click on Valider
.
Please note! Changing the first and last name of the account owner will result in a change in the FNUCI (Fichier National Unique des Cycles Identifiés). Please only make these changes in the event of a spelling error. If you are transferring ownership of any of your bikes, we strongly recommend that you transfer ownership of each bike individually. New owners will then be able to manage their bikes from their own accounts.
Case 1
To change your password, click on Mon profil
in the top menu.
Then click on Modifier
in the "My password" block.
Enter your current password, then your new password and repeat.

On the other hand, if you want to change your password because you've forgotten it, you'll need to log out and use the Forgotten password feature to change it.
You will then receive an authentication e-mail from no-reply@bicycode.eu.
To change your e-mail address, click on Mon profil
in the top menu.
Then click on Modifier
in the "My login" block.
Enter your e-mail address and click on Valider

About UNFCI and APIC
BicyCode marking is a marking system for bicycles. It consists of a unique number engraved or affixed to the bicycle frame. Here are the main features and benefits of this system:
- Unique identification: Each bike is given a unique number linking it to its owner. This marking is recorded in a national database (FNUCI).
- Theft reduction: This system deters thieves, as the bike becomes easily traceable and identifiable.
- Simplified return: In the event of theft and recovery by law enforcement agencies, the BicyCode number helps to quickly trace the rightful owner.
- Official recognition: BicyCode is recognized and supported by the French authorities and bicycle stakeholders.
To have your bike marked, you need to go to a BicyCode partner workshop or store, where the number is engraved or affixed. This is an additional measure to protect your bike and enhance safety.
The status of any bike can be consulted on the public website of APIC, the organization that manages the Fichier National Unique des Cycles Identifiés (FNUCI).
To do this, take the FNUCI code of the bike and go to the following page:
Public consultation of bicycle status is an invaluable tool for guaranteeing the safety and traceability of bicycles. Here are a few practical cases where it is useful to consult the code of a bicycle on the UNFCI website:
- Before buying a second-hand bike, check its status to make sure it hasn't been reported stolen or lost. This avoids disputes and the purchase of a stolen bike.
- Find a stolen or abandoned bike If you find an abandoned or suspect bike, check its FNUCI code to find out if it has been reported stolen. You can then contact the authorities so that they can take the necessary steps to find the owner. If the bike is not stolen, but abandoned, we advise you to contact the Lost & Found department.
- Checking for correct registration Once you've had your bike marked, it may be useful to check the FNUCI status to ensure that the registration has been carried out correctly by the dealer. Please note: Even if the registration is correct, you will still need to create a BicyCode account to manage your bike information. The owner's personal data can only be consulted by law enforcement agencies, in order to facilitate the return of a bike to its owner.
The FNUCI code (also called marking code or identification code) is a unique identifier, consisting of 10 alphanumeric characters, issued exclusively by approved identification operators since January 1ᵉʳ, 2021.
Once the bike has been identified and registered, its status is updated, which can be one of the following: in service, stolen or lost, for sale, out of service, or out of workshop.
These different statuses provide a better understanding of the distribution of bicycles in service in France compared to stolen bicycles. They also help you check the condition of a bike before buying it, or returning it to the gendarmerie or police station in the case of a stolen bike.
This is a unique identifier made up of 10 alphanumeric characters, issued exclusively by the FNUCI to approved identification operators. This code can be found either on a label, or engraved directly on the bike, obligatorily on the frame.
In concrete terms, what does this code look like?

An approved cycle identification operator is an entity authorized by the State to mark and register bicycles in the Fichier National Unique des Cycles Identifiés (FNUCI), in accordance with article R. 1271-16 of the French Transport Code.
List of approved operators
The list of operators, including BicyCode, is available on the website ofAPIC, the FNUCI's managing body.
You'll find contact details and an example of the marking used by each approved operator to identify cycles.
This way, if you have the slightest doubt about the operator responsible for your marking, you can easily identify them.
The Fichier National Unique des Cycles Identifiés (FNUCI) is a database dedicated to recording information about bicycles and their owners. It was created to provide greater visibility and enable law enforcement agencies to contact an owner when his or her bike is found.
Before the register was introduced, it was impossible to identify who owned a bike.
The FNUCI is managed exclusively by theAssociation de Promotion et d'Identification des Cycles (APIC), founded by the Union Sport & Cycle and the Fédération des Usagers de la Bicyclette (FUB), on behalf of the French government.
APIC is responsible for issuing marking codes to authorized operators, and for giving law enforcement agencies access to the information they need to identify an owner in the event of bike recovery.
